A light bulb, invented 125 years ago, is now "getting the plug pulled from it". The bill passed on Wednesday is banning the use of these lightbulbs, due to their excessive use of enegy. This bill is trying to cut energy down by 30%. Now new bulbs are being instituted, they are higher in cost, but use much less energy. When all of the estimated 4 billion light sockets in the USA are using these bulbs, $18 billion a year on energy alone. They plan to cut back the wattage by almost half by the year 2014.

Myth Buusters Extra Credit
For this assignment I watched "Super Hero Hour"! This episode was about the classic superhero urban legends. The two I focused on were the "grapling hook" and "Branding The Bad Guy".
In the grapling hook segment, there were many saftey percausions. Adam, Jamie, and Jess, their assisstant, tested this myth. They used saftey rope to insure that they wouldn't fall while scaling the bulidig. Also, incase the saftey ropes falied, the had cardboard boxes stacked beside the wall. The science in it was physics. They had to use mathematics to make the rigs to ensure saftey. It was prooved confirmed but impratical.
The next segment that I watched was called branding the bad guy. It was about how superhero's used to punch bad guys in the head and leave the imprint of their ring. the saftey precautions they used is that they didn't try on eachother, and when they punched the power meter, g=they used a boxing glove. The science in it was how they made the rig and that they used official terms EXAMPLE: PSI--pounds per square inch. It was prooved BUSTED!

My answers to the Omega Meme
My favorite TV show is probably Chuck on NBC because it is funny and has some action in it.
My favorite meal is Chicken Poppergosh. It is a family recipe that has noodles and chicken, my favorites!
My favorite non-school activity is hanging out with friends. It is the best thing to do to pass time.
Someone i look up to is my grandma. She is very persistant. After braking her hip, she was in Ireland, her home nation, 2 months after doing it.
My goal for the future is to go to a college like Villa Nova and become a doctor.
An hour after school i am at soccer or lacrosse practice(fall&spring) or doing HW or hanging out with friends(winter).

Current Event: Tourist Shuttle
Next week, a shuttle is going up with several civilians in it. Seven CIVILIANS, not even astronauts are going to space from Cape Canaveral, Florida. OK, so the people really aren't going to space, but there is a space simulater. Tickets for this $60 million dollar ride start at about $40 for an adult. This ride is not just for fun. you can use it to see what space would really be like. You get lectured before you get on. This ride was created so that people could expeirence the thrill of space without having to go through years of schooling.

Class Response: ROLLER COSTER!!!
In class for the past week, we have been learning about Newton's Laws. We started collected money(fake money to "buy" supplies). Since Monday, we have built a roller coaster following the requirements below:
-at least 4 hill(must go up than down)
-must have one roller-coaster element(loop, bend, etc.)
-must have kinetic energy and potential energy labeled at their highest points
-must have a group name(ours is the Speed Demon!:])
Today we finished. It has met all of the requirements and is able to carry a marble all the way through. In case you didn't know, I have included some websites for you to learn about the key terms I have bolded. I too have just learned of what these words mean.

Class Response: Science Stations
Recently in class, we worked on a packet called "Reflection, Refraction, Conduction, Convection, Oh My". Mrs. Treasure, my teacher, forgot to add the convection station, so I am going to exclude that from this post. Reflection, or the return of heat, lght or sound, was used in several stations. I think these stations were loads of fun, especially the one with bubbles! Next we learned about refraction, or the bending of a ray of light, sound, or heat. A trick I learned with these is that refraction bends, reflection bounces. There was only one conduction station. To fill you in, conduction is the transfer of heat beween two mediums, such as rubbing your hands together.

Current Event: Climate Study
Did you know that New York City produces one percent of the countries greenhouse gas? Now you know that that is true. In fact, NYC produces the same amount of gas as Ireland and Portugal. Mayor Bloomberg is hoping to cut it down by thirty percent within the next 27 years, which was just said on Tuesday. Each New Yorker leaves off one third of the emissions as the average American, but since it is so packed, it produces much of the percentage of the nations emissions. Just in case you didn't know, like me, greenhouse gas is the pollution from cars and objects like that. I learned that this effects the climate because it is basically traps the suns energy, warming the Earth, which is NOT good. I really think that we, as Americans, should cut down our emission level.

Class Response: Waves
Today in class, we learned about waves. We learned of the basics of waves--the medium, vbration, and other vocabulary like that. Other than that, we did an activity. In this activity, we were placed in a group with three other classmates. Our job was to tap a pencil into a basin of water. This consant motion caused waves to be formed. These waved moved out from the pencil in a circular figure. After around a minute of consant tapping, we stopped. Then we were instructed to place a cork into the middle of the bin. Then begin tapping again. The cork moved in the same direction again and again. Then we stopped to make observations. Through out this class period, I leaarned many things that i did not already learn. I thought that this activity was very entertaining and educational. I learned that energy is the ability to act and lead others(THE SOURCE USED). I also learned that waves were not only having t do with water.

Current event:Mystery of the Ark!
In ancient times, their was said to be an ark. Not just any ark, but Noah's Ark. This carried a male and female of almost every species in that part of the world. Thousands of years later, a spy plane took photos of an object lodged in the side of Mount Ararat in Turkey. In 2003, satellite photos of the object that sparked more interest. This story is very private, because they are trying to save the ark. A couple of months after, climbers in Iran found what they thought to be the remains of the ark. Scientists are saying that the water carried the ark up to the spot it is located, if that is even the correct ark. I feel that this is amazing that they are able to recover any artifact that is that old, especially that it is Noah's Ark.

Current Event:Deep Sea Discovery!

On the CNN website, their is an article on a deep sea dicovery. With globel warming, over 3900 square miles of ice melted over the Wendell Sea. This exposed new species that includes six pointed sea stars, fan-finned ice fish, and hundreds of sea cucumbers, as was reported on sunday, the 25th. Gauthier Chapelle of the Polar Foundation in Brussels says that it is all because of global warming. I find this good and bad. I think it is good that we have found more species, but bad that that was a effect of globel warming. The ice caps were 5000 years old and began crumbling in the past dozen years. Chapelle also says that new discoveries are expected to happen, because of the emense global warming. The scientists dicovered fifteen new types of shrimp. All of the animals will be anyzlyzed to find out if they truely a new species, says the article.

Extra Credit!
Genetics relates to the book we are reading in literature. We are reading To Kill a Mockingbird. In chapter 15, Haper Lee said the Jem(Jeremy Finch), resembled his father, Atticus Finch. Here are the exact words: "Jem's soft brown hair and eyes, his oval face, and snug fitting ears were our mothers, contrasting to Atticus's graying black hair, squarecut features, but they were alike somehow." All of these traits were passed down through heredity. One that stuck out to me in specific was "were our mothers". This told me that Jem resembled their mom more than there dad, most likely because she had the dominant traits.

Class Response!
We have been learning about genetics in class. Today, we did an activity where we made DNA strands using candy. These strands were double helix's. The gumdrops represented the specific chemicals. The twizzlers represented the structure of the DNA strand. Something I learned was that a double helix is two polynucleotide that are wrapped around each other to form the structure. Another things I learned was that the structures are antiparallel. I beleive that this is an interesting way to study the structure of the DNA strand. It clearlty interest the students, hense how I am using this as a blog response.

Class Response!
We are working on a genetics assessment in class. We are working in groups of 4 to answer an interesting topic. My group is doing designer babies, I personally have several questions to answer. I had to research in vitro fertilization and genetic engineering. I think that these are great options for an infertile couple. I learned many great things for these topics. I learned that genetic engineering is the changing of natural objects, such as genes. I also learned that in vitro fertilization is when an egg is fertilized outside of the body.

Current Event:Pluto!
We have always known that there were nine planets in our solar system. If somebody suddenly told you that there is only eight planets now, what would you think? You would probably say that there are nine: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Recently, scientists have discovered that Pluto is no longer a planet. A vote took place in August to demote Pluto. Only 424 astronomers were qualified to vote(that is around 5% of the astronomers in the world). The vote took eight days of continuous debate to come up with an answer. The article also states that Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet by definition. However, by definition, dwarf planets are NOT considered planets. Some astronomers are already sending around a petition to change the mind of the IAU. Overall, I think that if by definition, Pluto dosen't fit in as a planet, it shouldn't be counted as the ninth planet.
